"Soroptimist" is derived from two Latin words, "soror" meaning sister and "optima" meaning "best". It stands for "women at their best helping others to be their best".

Art Of Love

SID's Art of Love project uses Art as a unique therapeutic activity to develop the special child's inner talent and self-confidence. It allows the children to express themselves in a safe and condusive environment and have their voices heard. It focuses on a group of both girls and boys with special needs and their mothers.

Special Needs children in Malaysia are often excluded from mainstream educational opportunities as regular schools lack facilities to handle children with physical disabilities and do not have enough teachers who are trained to handle special needs children. These special needs children include those suffering from Down's Syndrome, Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy and visual or hearing impairment. These children often suffer from lack of motivation and guidance and as a result suffer from low self esteem. In addition they lack skills and training which allow them to seek employment and become self- sufficient.

In addition, this project aims to help mothers of these children (12 women) who are the primary care-givers, cope with their child's disability and share in their special child's development and growth. The Power of Love Exhibition held in February 2014 is proof that this project was able to achieve significant and measurable outcomes within a short span of 4 months. At least 60 children (mostly girls) including those from SID's Centre had a chance to showcase their paintings which was open to the public.

The exhibition was publicised in the local newspapers.
